TUHSD Summer School
Unfortunately, the state has not restored funding to education, and therefore, TUHSD will be unable to offer a traditional summer school program during 2013. Most students who enroll in summer school do so to repeat a course that was previously failed. Because summer school will no longer be an option, TUHSD administrative staff is working to develop alternative methods of credit recovery for students who have failed a graduation requirement. More information will be available on this topic in the coming months.
As a response to state cuts to schools over the past four years, TUHSD has been forced to make approximately four million dollars in cuts in order to have a balanced budget. Summer school, which was entirely funded by the state, was one of the cuts made in 2010. Shortly after the summer school cut was approved, TUHSD received a small amount of federal jobs bill money that enabled us to restore summer school for two years, 2011 and 2012. This source of revenue was a “one-time” allocation as opposed to on going funding.
